Toast Of The Town: Wine As A Preventative Medicine

While not many of us look forward to taking our daily medication, some remedies are more palatably pleasing than others. Among these, some preventative medicines for heart disease and some cancers, including red wine.

And while many are cheering the benefits of the robust beverage others are wondering if it's really the toast of the town. And, according to experts, the answer is an unresounding yes and no.

They note that although wine offers many preventative powers against heart disease, some cancers, and inflammation cause by arthritis, these qualities are not intrinsic to the fruit of the vine.

Experts assert that while red wine (in moderation) "does" have health benefits, they are not any greater than those they can obtain via a hearty diet of antioxidants including fresh fruits such as red grapes, fresh squeezed grape juice, grape seed oil, deep green veggies, melons, pumpkin, squash, blueberries, peppers and other brightly-colored fruits and foods.

However, they "do," note that the antioxidants in red wine may be more concentrated than in other foods due to the fermentation process. Yet, the concentrated levels may not be significant enough to make daily consumption recommended.

Also, health and nutrition experts note that there is also evidence that moderate amounts of other alcohol may be just as effective in boosting HDL (good) cholesterol. Still, they (the experts) assert that they remain reluctant to encourage people to start drinking in an effort to stay healthy (against heart disease and some cancers) because alcohol consumption may raise other risks and concerns. Among these, weight gain and addiction problems. Excessive drinking can also increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and also estrogen levels in women, which has been linked to increased risk of breast cancer.

For women who fancy white wine, beer and other types of alcohol, the "bad" news is that none possess the same preventative and protective powers as red wine, since all the antioxidants are found in the skin and seeds of the grapes. White wine is fermented without the skins of the grapes.

Women wine drinkers say experts can enjoy two to three ounces a day for the added antioxidant and benefits, but remember not to use it as an excuse to drink or in place of a healthy and balanced diet rich in preventative properties.

Great Article from John Dobbs

by John Dobbs: johndobbs.wordpress.com Jesus Christ said, “Blessed are the peacemakers”. It could be said that the general atmosphere among churches of Christ is anything but peaceful. It seems that many Christians are gearing up for ecclesiastical war. In 1993, Tom Olbricht wrote an article for Image Magazine entitled, “There is a Noise of War in the Camp” (24-28). The ‘noise of war’ image is still apropos for churches of Christ today. Steven Goad writes, “In just my own lifetime, I have wit

States Can’t Force Truckers to Check IDs,

Thu, 21 Feb 2008 11:47:05 PST
The Supreme Court ruled this week that Maine cannot legally require delivery truck drivers to verify the age of buyers before making a delivery, in addition to intercepting packages from unlicensed tobacco sellers, the AP reports. The justices ruled that federal transportation law bars the state from making such demands. The situation in Maine sounds eerily close to laws regulating direct to consumer wine shipments. In an argument similar to beer and wine wholesalers’ position against direct s

A Guide To Home Wine Racks

A Home winerack....

Home wine racks make storing wine a breeze. With a home winerack, you can conveniently store several bottles or tens of bottles right in your pantry, on the wall, on a kitchen table or countertop, or in the basement or wine cellar if you have one. In short, they are versatile and accomodating.

They are generally made out of either hardy woods, like cedar, fir or pine. Some of the best home wine racks are made out of metal. Wine bottles require proper care. To preserve the wine itself, bottles should be stored in a sturdy, elevated unit, which is placed in a dry environment, like a pantry or cellar. If you don't plan to store the wine for years and consume it soon after you buy it, then storing it right in the kitchen is perfectly fine.

Today's economical home winerack is often made with conserving space in mind. You no longer need to worry about having ample cellar space; you can create an instant cellar right in your pantry. Therefore, if you are looking for a durable, safe, storage unit for your wine collection, a home winerack is ideally suited for you.

Home wine racks come in an array of sizes. A wooden wine rack is stackable, so it can grow along with your collection. You can create an instant cellar in a matter of minutes with easy to construct units. Moreover, a wood home winerack is suitable for staining or painting, so you can customize it to match your existing home d?cor. Every wine rack comes with complete easy to understand instructions, necessary hardware and the promise that it will make your wine storage more convenient, while taking up less space.

Metal wine racks can add an artistic element to displaying your wine selection. Presentation is an important element in any entertaining event. Create a greater sense of class by displaying bottled wine in a spiraling wine tree or sculpture instead of just lined up on the bar. It is sure to make for added conversation.

Home wine racks are easy to assemble, and many are priced with your budget in mind. Regardless if you are looking for an elegant display or proper storage for your wines, a home winerack is the answer, for both the serious wine connoisseur and beginner.
